Five- Eyes Legal Review Course

Legal reviews are a core competency for military legal advisers. They enable States to ensure that the study, development, acquisition and adoption of new weapons, means and methods of warfare comply with international law. As defence acquisition cycles accelerate in pace and scale, this expertise is no longer peripheral, it is mission-critical.

We are therefore pleased to co-host the inaugural 5-Eyes Article 36 Legal Review Course with the British Army Legal Services (ALS) in March 2026.

The course is designed to provide military legal advisers with a solid foundation in:

• The international legal framework governing weapons;
• The structure and conduct of national legal review processes;
• Practical methodologies for conducting reviews; and
• Addressing challenges presented by new technology capabilities.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the consistency, rigour and interoperability of Article 36 legal review practice across partner nations.
